Backpack Fit, Packing & Care

Fit, pack and care for your backpack

A well-chosen backpack should match the intended load, sit close to the body and allow comfortable movement. This guide explains a practical starting point; always follow product labels and adjust for your body, route and conditions.

Choose capacity deliberately

Lay out your usual gear before choosing a litre capacity. Avoid buying excessive volume merely to fill later, and compare product dimensions with laptops, cameras or other rigid items.

Adjust in the right order

Loosen straps, put the loaded pack on, tighten shoulder straps evenly, then adjust chest, compression or waist straps if present. Stop if you feel numbness, sharp pressure or restricted breathing.

Load for balance

Place soft items at the bottom, dense items close to the back and frequently used items near the top or in exterior pockets. Keep left and right weight balanced and secure loose straps.

Weather protection

Unless explicitly stated otherwise, a backpack is not waterproof. Use appropriate dry bags or protective sleeves for electronics, medication, documents and other moisture-sensitive contents.

Cleaning and storage

Empty every pocket, brush away dry soil and spot clean with cool water and mild soap. Air-dry fully away from direct heat and store uncompressed in a dry, ventilated place.
